How does acupuncture work?Acupuncture needles are inserted into various points in the body which stimulate Qi, the energy which is our life force. In this way the energy can be increased, calmed down or encouraged to flow more smoothly. The Yin and Yang, two opposing and complementary forces essential to life, must be in balance in our bodies for us to be in good health. Acupuncture points are used to balance the Qi, Yin and Yang in the body. Acupuncture points often have several different ways in which they can be used. For example, this point on the hand can be used to help many different conditions, including headaches, constipation, toothache or stress. What happens when I come for acupuncture treatment? The first appointment normally takes an hour and a half, as I need to take quite a lot of information from you to make a full diagnosis. I will ask a lot of questions about all aspects of your health and lifestyle, then look at your tongue and take your pulses on both wrists before starting treatment. What does it feel like? There is usually a dull ache, a tingling feeling, or a pulling sensation, which most people do not find at all unpleasant. The needles are very fine and much smaller than the type used for injections. A feeling of calm and relaxation follows as the body's energies are brought into balance. ![]() This picture shows the size of needle most commonly used. How many sessions will I need?4 to 6 sessions, coming weekly, is normally recommended to begin with. Every one is different though, so this often varies. Some people only need a few sessions, while others feel continued benefit and may have ongoing treatment several times a year. How much does it cost?First session (around 1½ hours) £55. Subsequent sessions (around 45 minutes) £38. For clients returning after a gap of a year or more, £45 for the first session (about an hour and 15 minutes). Is it safe?Yes! All needles are sterile and disposable. I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council (http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/), which insists on a very high standard of hygiene approved by the Department of Health. All members of the British Acupuncture Council (MBAcC) are properly trained at approved colleges and fully qualified. Should my doctor know?It is up to you if you wish to tell your doctor you are having acupuncture. Having acupuncture may enable you to reduce or even stop taking some forms of medication, but you should consult your doctor if you intend to do this. Always tell the acupuncturist about any medication you are taking. How can I arrange an appointment?Contact me from the "More about Julia" page. Last Modified 4/8/09 9:33 PM |
